James Lang is a British artist currently living and working in London, having returned from Beijing in June 2022 after almost five years in China. He graduated from Liverpool School of Art in 2011 and from Camberwell College of Arts in 2015 with an MA in Visual Arts.
Living in China was a transformative experience for Lang. The geographical distance made him feel unexpectedly closer to the culture and visual history he had left behind, leading to a renewed engagement with Western art and medieval history. His practice draws heavily from illuminated manuscripts and church wall paintings, reinterpreting sacred imagery through a contemporary lens.
Richly textured and layered, his work reflects a deep appreciation for the past while questioning our modern relationship with religious iconography and collective memory. Through this process, Lang creates a living dialogue between the visual language of the Middle Ages and the concerns of our own time.
In 2026, Lang undertook an artist residency in St. Wolfgang, further developing his research into European sacred art traditions and material processes.
Lang has exhibited widely in both London and China, and his work is held in private and public collections internationally.
